MAY DAY

What is MAY DAY?

Many people who have heard of may day think it has to do with people dancing around a pole. This is a mistake...

May Day - celebrated around the world on May 1st, is actually a day reserved to celebrate and remember people who have reasons to protest.

May Day originally began as a holiday called "International Workers Day." This holiday was created to remember an event called the HAYMARKET AFFAIR.

In the 1880s working people were oppressed because the laws allowed business owners to mistreat their employees.

Owners were allowed to make workers work long hours in unsafe places. Workers could be fired for no reason. Even children could be made to work.

Workers everywhere began to resist. In May of 1886 resistance happened in the form of a march and rally in a Chicago city square Chicago called "Haymarket."

The protest started peacefully but ended in violence when a bomb was set off. Gunfire was exchanged. Police and protesters died.

Instead of frightening the resistance, the Haymarket affair inspired them to work harder. Workers eventually won protections from many kinds of oppressions done by business owners.

Every year workers all over the world celebrate "May Day" to remember what happened because of the Haymarket Affair.

Eventually May Day became known as a day in which people celebrate protest and resistance of any kind... Violent or non-violent. Effective or ineffective.

The best way to plan a resistance is to take a good look at what has been done in similar situations in the recent past.

What does May Day

have to do with YOU?

How do we plan a

RESISTANCE?

This year Ethnic Studies students at this school, and schools all over the city will be participating in a May Day protest.

Student leaders from each participating school will be meeting. The purpose of our resistance and how we will resist will be planned carefully... by YOU!

Don't sweat it! Teachers all over the city are doing this project, and we have A PLAN!

Welcome to

the

RESISTANCE
