- First boatpeople came 1979 after the

Vietnam War

- In the late 1970s more and more

boatpeople came to Australia

- First refugee camps were opened in

Sydney, Perth and Melbourne

- Establish an immigration detention (1992)

- Try to catch boatpeople and bring

them into camps

Policy nowadays

Immigration Restrict

Act 1901

- Immigration policy against non-European

people

law prohibited the non-European´s to

immigrate

- Immigrants needed to write a dictation test to get to

Australia

- Beginning of the "White Australia policy"

- Especially British migrants were preferred

- 1949-1966 the Menzies and Holt

government changed these laws

the origin was not important anymore

- 2006-2010 the immigration detention ended

- Julia Gilliard reintroduced it

- 2013 " Stop-the-Boats" election campaign

from Tony Abbott

Operation Sovereign Borders

- Stop all boatpeople

- 2013 about 20.000 refugees

- Since 2014 only single boats

- Refugee camps at Papua-Neuguinea and

Nauru

- Refuses asylum to anyone who does not

apply from abroad
