How this applies to Treasure Island

Thanks for Watching

  • Sepsis is a potentially deadly whole body inflammation caused by a serious infection, and can continue even after the infection passes.

  • Sometimes serious sepsis can lead to organ dysfunction.

  • Many times sepsis is caused by bacterium, fungus, and parasites in the blood, urinary tract, lungs, skin, or other tissues.

  • In 18th century England, there were no natural cures or vaccines to combat blood poisoning. Anyone who was infected was pretty much dead.
  • Today, there are modern vaccines for sepsis. People today can take vaccines to protect themselves.

Sepsis can be treated with few modern cures such as antibiotics and IV fluids. Antibiotics are prescribed by a physician and usually get more specific as time goes on. Also antibiotics themselves don't suffice, fluids are also needed to treat sepsis. This ensures that the patient receives enough fluid to remain stable and alive.

  • Some of these symptoms include nausea, weakness, dizziness, sleepiness, and loss of appetite.

  • Because some of these symptoms are linked to other diseases, it is hard to diagnose sepsis.

Sepsis could have occurred in Treasure Island because in 1800s there wasn't any proper medical treatment. During the treasure hunt they didn't realize that anything serious could have happened. Luckily, it didn't happen in Treasure Island.
