The path through your Digestive System
The Cheese Sandwich is consumed through the mouth, where it’s chewed and the saliva in your mouth breaks down the sandwich and the enzymes turn the starch molecules in the bread into glucose, this is consumed by our cells to give us energy. The food molecules are broken down to make it easier for us to swallow.
When the cheese sandwich reaches the throat it is pushed down to the oesophagus using muscles in our throat, this joins the throat to the stomach.
When the cheese sandwich reaches the stomach, acids called hydrochloric are used to break down the food molecules even more. Another type of enzymes called Protease are used to break down the proteins, from the food, into amino acids, these then help us repair muscles and tissue around our bodies.
Whats left of the cheese sandwich, then its mixed together and turned into a paste-like substance which is then passed through to the small intestine.
Enzymes work together to break down the food particles until the nutrients 'glucose and fatty acids' are small enough to be able to pass through the Villi, from where they are released into our bloodstream.

The bile in your body increases the amount of the fat, so instead of there being large molecules of fat being consumed, there are smaller drops, which can be easier to digest using the enzymes.

The faeces is stored in the rectum until, its ready to be passed through into the anus where finally the faeces will be released.
The solid waste left over when your food is digested by your body still has some water, but also other things like bacteria and fibre. When you go to the toilet, you get rid of waste
The small intestine will release the waste products left from the cheese sandwich, they are passes along to the large intestine.
The large intestine is located around the surface of the small intestine. The large intestine will extract all the water from the remaining molecules of the cheese sandwich which has now become faeces. This is sent onto the Rectum.
The small intestine is made up of three parts:
- Duodenum= Where iron is absorbed.
- Jejunum= Where amino acids and the digested carbohydrates are absorbed.
- Ileum= Where vitamins B12 and bile salts are absorbed.
