"Fog" By Carl Sandburg

This poem, like "Fog", breaks from the conventional equal stanzas and descriptive writing. It gives a vague, simplistic thought about a normal farming tool. This poem may be influenced by the desire for simplicity in a complicated world. It also refers to the agriculturalay of life that was common in the early 20th century, and how life depended on the success of the farm.

This poem reflects the break from

conventional structure in poetry to

unconventional. The stanzas are not

equal in lines- the first stanza has 2

and the second stanza has 4. The

poem also has a melancholy tone to it- the cat is alone, looking at the city, like it is contemplating whether the city is the place to be. This probably relates back to the urbanization that was occurring in the turn of the century and the change from agricultural ways of life to city life.
