12 weeks (womb)

In the womb

conception to 8 weeks

There is a "limb bud" and knob-like fingers. Little to no movement exists.

The forearm and fingernails begin to develop and show. The fingers have not separated, but there is more definition that is rapidly growing.

1946 -Maturation

Birth

8 months (womb)

The baby's hand is fully defined, as well as the arms, legs, and toes. They are mobile and able to wiggle.

The child's development comes from within, specifically, the genes, in a fixed sequence.

The hand and arm are developed and able to move, but the control of the hand and fingers are limited to only reflexes stimulated by someones finger. "A useless organ". Most of the time, "fisted".

He was known as the "baby doctor" by the 1940's

Arnold Gesell was born in 1880-1961. He grew up in Alma, Wisconsin. He described his life in this small town much like the growth process of children. "Its seasons and sequences".

In the embryo, first the heart, then brain, spinal cord, arms and legs.

24 weeks

The fingers are open and the fist is unfolded. The baby can play and curl their hand around any object. Here they can grasp a cube, but it holds in this "cupped" manner.

Just four weeks later, development has transformed and the baby can now hold two cubes and even investigate them simultaneously. Before one cube was enough to hold his attention. One month has transformed his manipulation ability.
