ABOUT TYPHOON NINA

Typhoon Nina occurred in china in 1975. It killed at least 500,000 people and collapsed almost 6 million buildings. It lasted from the 30th of July to the 6th of August. In just 24 hours it gave out 1,060 millimeters of rain, causing dams to buckle and streets to flood. It caused around $1.2 billion dollars in damages to China and Taiwan. It was ranked the fourth deadliest typhoon on record.

SHORT AND LONG TERM EFFECTS

WHAT CAUSES A TYPHOON?

There are six atmospheric conditions:

  • Warm ocean weather
  • Low atmospheric stability
  • Sufficient Coriolis force
  • Moist mid atmosphere
  • Upper atmosphere divergence
  • A pre existing disturbance

The creation of a typhoon:

  • It starts with a tropical thunderstorm over the western Pacific Ocean
  • When the winds from the storm pull up moisture from the ocean it creates heat
  • The heat causes more air to move to the eye/center causing evaporation.
  • The heat and air rotate around the eye/center there for creating a typhoon

Short Term:

  • Floods
  • Damages to dams
  • Re-building businesses
  • Re-building schools
  • Cleaning debris
  • Injures
  • Power loss
  • 380,000 homes destroyed
  • Declared "State of Calamity"

Long Term:

  • Deaths
  • Soil Salinity
