I believe the journey is more important than the destination. Without the tough journey, the destination seems less valuable. For example, if you get a trophy or award you are probably going to treasure and keep it for some time. You keep it because it represents your hard work, not because of the spray-painted plastic its made of. Your hard work represents the journey, and the trophy symbolizes the destination. However, if you get a trophy for something that isn't very impressive, then you value it less.

This poem fits the unit theme very well. It's describing the tough and risky journey that people had to go on to come to America. For example, the speaker says, "my grandparents who waited the long days of quarantine" and "waiting for... a thousand years." Also, the poem relates to leaving behind because when the speaker's grandparents came to America they were leaving behind everything they loved, such as their family, friends, and home.

This poem is about people who came to America from a foreign country to achieve their dreams. The speaker's ancestors came to Ellis Island many years ago and the speaker is describing hardships they had to endure. In the last stanza, however, the speaker seems to be talking about the Native Americans and how they had to be "invaded" by the Europeans for other people to come and live here.
