Ferdinand Georg Frobenius

Life

  • Born in Charlottenburg in 1849
  • In 1867, he went to the University of Gottingen
  • Attended lectures by Kronecker, Kummer, and Weierstrass
  • Recieved doctorate in 1870 with Weierstrass as supervisor on differential equations
  • Taught high school for 4 years before being appointed as math professor at University of Berlin
  • Moved to Zurich after 1 year and taught at Eidgenossische Polytechnikum
  • Married, had children, and then got appointed in 1893 to hold a chair in Berlin and got elected to the Prussian Academy of Sciences

Contributions

Three theorems stating that groups of a certain order are not simple

  • Proof of Sylow theorems for abstract groups
  • Created theory of group characters and group representations which led to Frobenius reciprocity
  • Introduced a way to turn primes into conjugacy classes in Galois groups over Q
