-"A WHITE MAN'S WAR"

-BY HANS

Black Canadians service in the military can be recalled way back before "Canada" became Canada. It wast not the reason of having a devotion for their land, but that they were offered freedom and land if they gave their consent to fight in the British cause, They were desperate and gave themselves to build a new life in British North America.

American War Independence, the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837, still they gave themselves only for liberation and access to land. Somehow their true bravery were disregarded, as to something that shouldn't be respected, or even recognized.

Thank You.

Elaborating more on the Black Canadians bravery being disregarded. As a result, numerous Black Canadians enlisted When World War 1 arose to make them respected. Unfortunately back then people were prejudice, jerks maybe. They criticized the Black Canadians, in other words, they were rebuked. Discretion was given, only letting them enlist in Battalions, It was "a white man's war." said the commanding officer. Obviously, this event was racial discrimination saying that they are greater because of their and nationality

Black Canadians did not agree to this discrimination and protested to the government asking to have a chance to do their part on a larger scale. thankfully it was accepted and on July 5, 1916, the No.2 construction Battalion was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia. It was the large Black military unit in Canadian history. More than 600 men were accepted, most were from Nova Scotia, others were from New Brunswick, Ontario, the west, and even some from the United states.

Reverand William White was the Battalion's chaplain having a rank of Honourary Captain, who had also played a leading role in creating the unit. With the battalion formed they were tasked with no- combat support roles. Service in Canada gave them a chance to go to England and got to Eastern France in 1917 serving honourably with the Canadian Forestry Corps. tHtey supported by maintaining trenches on the front lines, also helping construct roads and railways November 1918 the War finally ended and the Battalion sailed to Halifax in 1919, the unit disband in 1920.

In addition, for their bravery 2,000 men that earned medals of bravery for being determined to be in the unit. Contributing on making the weapons and supplies, taking part in patriotic activities such as raising funds helped to show their importance in the military.

Today people still celebrate the service the " Black Battalion" and other Black Canadians who fought in World War 1.
