The gold cradle/rocker box was developed in the California gold rush in 1849

HOW IT WAS MADE
How was it used?
The miners put dirt in the top of the rocker box and shook it while pouring water slowly.
Gold cradles/rocker boxes were made from a lot of different kinds of wood, contain of a rectangular base on two curved rockers, made out of wood with a metal base.
There is a long wooden handle at one end, that is used to rock the rock box from side to side on it's rockers. The handle end base is high, with a piece of wood across the cradle (protected with metal). Forming a rectangular spacing. A wooden carver, with corners protected with metal and a met sieve base, places into the top rectangle.A wooden scoop,edged in pine, pitted, and well worn at the end, was used to scrub soil and water against the sieve, then it falls into the base and is washed out leaving the gold int the base at the end
