The name Kiwi was derived from our native flightless bird (Kiwi). The name kiwi was originally nicknames for serviceman ( The military ) in world war 1 but then it gradually became the nickname for all new Zealanders.
Most people call us kiwis but we are also known as 'maoriland', 'The shaky Isles', 'Pig Island', 'Half gallon' and 'Pavlova paradise' And some others. Some of these nicknames are not related to our country most of them have been heard in the United States.
We are not named after the small brown fruit. In New Zealand they are called Kiwifruit were never ever just "Kiwi" the kiwifruit was a marketing name as New Zealand was the first place where they were grown commercialy but they never got around to trademarking the name.
