Stage 2: Design

  • Individual design plans
  • Airfoil designs on the NASA airfoil Sim3
  • Discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each design
  • Chose Scott's design to use

Stage 5: Modifications

Stage 1: Research

Stage 6: Testing With Modifications

Checked the CG

  • Materials to use
  • Wing airfoil shape
  • How gliders work

Used duct tape to help support the wings and make them more durable

Added String underneath wing to increase stability

Added two bolts to the front to even the weight out and make the CG be where we wanted it

Glider Dimensions

Wing Span: 4' 9"

Chord: 5.5"

Wing Area: 156.75"

Aspect Ratio: 10.37:1

Stage 4: Tests

Results:

From the First set of tests we found that our shoebox glider was promising but had some problems that we needed to modify

Trial 1:

Launch Height: 6' 2"

Glide Distance: 38 ft

Glide Ratio: 6.16: 1

Wings Break off on Landing

Wings move to much during flight

Tail Heavy

Trial 2:

Launch Height: 6' 2"

Glide Distance: 39 ft

Glide Ratio: 6.32 : 1

Stage 3: Building cont.

Trial 3:

Launch Height: 6' 2"

Glide Distance: 40ft

Glide Ratio: 6.49: 1

Stage 3: Building

  • Cut the basic shape of our wings, tail and nosecone pieces
  • Sanded the pieces down
  • Began hot gluing the pieces to the shoebox
  • Added string to the wings for support
  • Measured out styrofoam needed
  • Chose which shoebox to use
  • Traced our airfoil onto the wings
