At Mt. Blanc, France, the 5th regiment's bloodiest day, Hulbert was leading his men into the German ternches, as he was struck down by an unknown german machine gunner.

The French awarded him with the Croix de Guerre Order of the Army for his deeds.

On June 28th, the now widowed Victoria C Hulbert christened the destroyer USS Henry L Hulbert

The USS Hulbert took part in destroyer movements untill it was stationed at Pearl Harbor in August 1941

When Japaneese planes were spotted on December 7th, 1941, the USS Hulbert immediately opened fire and brought dow a kate II torpedo bomber and damaged two others. The Hulbert remained unscathed throughout the whole battle. Afterwards, her boats helped rescue sailors from the sinking battleships

She was used for patroling untill the end of the war

She was sold for scrap in 1945, but her bell was saved. It now stands in the Marine's Training Academy as a memorial to the man who gave his life for his adopted country
