Hulbert, now 51, again shipped out, this time to France.
The Allies were making ground, and he needed to be a part of it
He was old enough to be the father of the men in his unit.
At Mt. Blanc, France, the 5th regiment's bloodiest day, Hulbert was leading his men into the German ternches, as he was struck down by an unknown german machine gunner.
The French awarded him with the Croix de Guerre Order of the Army for his deeds.
Henry Hulbert
On June 28th, the now widowed Victoria C Hulbert christened the destroyer USS Henry L Hulbert
The USS Hulbert took part in destroyer movements untill it was stationed at Pearl Harbor in August 1941
When Japaneese planes were spotted on December 7th, 1941, the USS Hulbert immediately opened fire and brought dow a kate II torpedo bomber and damaged two others. The Hulbert remained unscathed throughout the whole battle. Afterwards, her boats helped rescue sailors from the sinking battleships
She was used for patroling untill the end of the war
She was sold for scrap in 1945, but her bell was saved. It now stands in the Marine's Training Academy as a memorial to the man who gave his life for his adopted country
