Aluminum Mining Process

Aluminum is the third most common element in the Earth's Crust. To be able to get the metal, it has to be mined from the Earth. To be refined, it has to be from the Bauxite Ore.

Ore must be discovered before it is mined. Lots of precautions must take place before mining, like the animals living there and the vegetation. This is needed to avoid or minimize the impact of mining on them.

Aluminum Properties

Aluminum Refining

Corrosion Resistant. Can protect and conserve things.

Light weight and very strong compared to other metals.

Aluminum refining requires enormous amounts of energy.

Bauxite Ore is refined in a 3 step process, in a process called Bayer Process

1. Bauxite ore is crushed and mixed with sodium hydroxide. This creates aluminum oxide.

Very ductile and low melting point and density.

China is the largest producer and consumer of aluminum. China accounts for almost half of the consumption of Aluminum. Europe accounts for about 16% of the worlds Aluminum consumption and North America accounts for about 12%.

Impermeable, odorless, and non toxic. Does not release aromas or tastes.

Aluminum Prices

2. The aluminum oxide is evaporated and forms sodium aluminate.

Very good at heat and electricity conductivity.

100% recyclable and requires very little energy to remelt.

Prices change a lot over 30 years. No definite theory on why price of aluminum changed, but there are possible reasons.

3. Aluminum hydroxide is put with liquid sodium aluminate, causing aluminum oxide to precipitate. It is cleaned and a white powder is left, which is alumina.

Companies switched from metals like steel to aluminum to build cars and airplanes.

Companies are saving money and switch to metals cheaper.

Life Cycle of Aluminum Pans

By : Tyler Nguyen

Supply and Demand

Demands started high.

The demand in 2007-2009 were enormous, but over time the supply slowly grew and met the demand.

Manufacturing of Pans

1. Aluminum Ingots are melted down and put into a cast for the shape.

Disposal, Recycling and Environmental Effects

5. Primer is added on top for a non-stick coating and then baked so coatings stay on.

2. Excess of casting is cut off and is sanded off to make sure it is not sharp.

Disposal

If Aluminum is thrown away, it will sit in a garbage dump. Even if the aluminum is run through an incinerator, it will take at least 500 years to decompose.

Environmental Effects

Aluminum refining releases lots of greenhouse gases that can be toxic vapors.

Waste products from the smelting process can be dumped into rivers or lakes which pollute the water.

3. They are put through a sand blasting chamber and receive their ceramic coating.

4. Pans are rubbed down and a five coating material is put on which contains diamond particles and chemicals.

6. Bottom smoothed out so it is even and a handle is attached to the pan with a screw.

Importance of Recycling

Our aluminum reserves are expected to last for many years. Aluminum recycling only uses 5% of the energy it takes to refine aluminum without all the pollutants.
