Delaware Colony

Delaware

  • One of the four middle colonies
  • Located under New Jersey, to the right of Maryland
  • First settlers were Dutch
  • explored on behalf of Henry Hudson and Cornelius Hendrikson
  • Swedes were next
  • England settled after taking the land from the Dutch
  • The Dutch arrive first in 1631, but die in argument with Indians
  • Peter Minuit and other Swedes colonize in 1638
  • set up a colony called Fort Carolina (present-day Wilmington)
  • A lot of dispute between Dutch and Swedes on whose land it should be
  • England gained the land in 1664
  • Western and Northern parts were granted to William Penn, upsetting Lord Baltimore
  • Border was decided in 1778

  • Geographical features:
  • Atlantic coastal plains, flat lowland.
  • Over 30,000 acres of swamp, but had fertile soil and was good for farming
  • Climate:
  • Mild climate, suitable for agriculture

  • Named after Lord de la Warr, who was thought to discover the Delaware River and Delaware Bay on his voyage to Virginia
  • Major towns: Wilmington, Georgetown
  • Source of income: trade (exported wheat, cattle, rice, and iron ore products such as kettles, tools, and plows )
  • known as the bread basket colony
  • Delaware may want more independence, but won't want to separate entirely
  • Supported anything that had to do with war
  • Petitioned for independent colonial legislature in 1701
  • Most likely wanted to go to war
  • Natural resources: farmland, timber, iron ore, fish
  • estimated population in 1780: 45,400
