The common assassins used clubs, knives, cleavers and razors, because they usually couldn’t afford to buy quality swords. They also poisoned their targets using the deathcap mushroom, which had a similar taste to other common mushrooms and would kill their target slowly after some time. Most targets were beaten, rather than stabbed, to death. They could sometimes use grappling hooks to scale walls and to take down opponents, but their signature way of killing was to infiltrate a palace or stronghold and strangle or stab their opponent.
King Phillip IV of France was in substantial debt to the Templars and had no way of paying it back. So on Friday the thirteenth Phillip sent out his agents to arrest the Templars. He then had them tortured until they 'confessed' to multiple charges such as witchcraft and denying Christ. Pope Clement V was forced to dissolve the Templars due to all the confessions and extreme pressure from King Phillip. 44 members of the Templars were executed because they denied being heretics while all the other Templars confessed the grand master of the Templars was burned at the stake.
The Templars grew extremely powerful, and gained the allegiance of the Pope for some time. They owned a lot of land in Europe and became wealthy through donations. They started one of the world's first 'banking systems' where they would keep pilgrims' possessions safe while they traveled to Jerusalem, and deliver their things to them by exchanging codes.
The assassins originated in the Middle East, but the assassins of the Middle Ages were formed shortly before the First Crusade. Not much is known about their beginnings as they were extremely secretive, but the start can be traced back to their first Grand Master, Hassan-i Sabbah, who started the 'Order of Assassins'.
Hassan-i Sabbah's Order was well organized with many different ranks and properly trained, intelligent followers who carried out his bidding.
Many of the assassins, however, were only poor peasants who killed randomly for food or weapons.
Today, the term 'assassin' is used to describe any professional or hired murderer.
The assassins would be hunted by the
Templars. The Templars had better
equipment , more men, horses and
aces to proper training. The assassins
were better at assaulting people on the
roads. But when the element of steath
was not involved in their fights the
Templars would win.
The Templars were an elite group of warriors who were formed shortly after the First Crusade, around 1118. They were created to protect the road to the Holy Land so pilgrims could safely travel to Jerusalem. However, it is also suggested that the Templars were not created to protect the Holy Land, instead they were created to hunt for relics such as the Ark of the Covenant, a piece of the cross Jesus died on, or the Holy Grail.
They wore white robes with red crosses, the symbol of the Templars. They also wore elaborate and expensive amour, unlike the poor assassins.
