CONFIDENCE... is it all made up

MAKEUP?

By: Amanda Cristobal, Emma Della Rocca, Marilena Furgiuele, Salina Rezene

HYPOTHESIS: Female high school students apply makeup throughout the day to boost their confidence (through body language) while at school

*indicators of confidence level included body posture and language

confidence level

makeup

Our plan to test out our hypothesis is to conduct a small video questionnaire where we will be asking Loretto Abbey students a couple of questions related to their personal opinions and feeling on their own use of makeup. We interview three girls; some with makeup and the others without. In this video our goal was to witness whether or not the female students seemed confidence through their body language with makeup or without it on.

  • surveyed one religion class from each grade to avoid biased data
  • gathered that out of the girls who wore makeup, 60% of them felt more confident while wearing makeup and the other 40% had the same amount of confidence either way experiments proved our hypothesis
  • most girls were more confident while wearing makeup, even in our interviews.

!!Makeup boosts confidence!!

Experiments/ Observations

OVERVIEW

We wanted to test how:

makeup affects the confidence and self-esteem of Loretto Abbey girls.

Why?

SECONDARY SOURCE

“Makeup and its Affect on Self Esteem”

  • Individual tested 4 Caucasian, college-aged girls self-esteem based on societies expectations
  • "women often vary their beauty routine to match the situations they are in"
  • Ex: going out, staying in
  • had to wear the makeup they would wear to go out to a party to class, and the makeup they would wear to class to a party
  • related to the field of sociology, as we are trying to figure out how makeup influences the development, structure, and functioning of the female society (specifically at Loretto Abbey).
  • makeup is such a prevalent part of society today
  • relevant to all girls at the school whether or not they wear makeup.

3 Questions

What impact has makeup had on our culture?

Why has it become such a big epidemic?

How do cosmetics affect the confidence of teenage girls?

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:

  • the girls who did not wear any makeup for the most part still felt confident regardless of how bare their face was.
  • we noticed that the girls who were wearing makeup were
  • projecting their voices a lot more
  • using a lot more expression in their hands while answering,
  • while the girl with no make up had a softer voice and had less expression while answering the same questions.
  • girls who don't wear makeup are still confident, just not as confident as those girls who do have makeup on
  • original hypothesis was correct

DEPENDENT VARIABLE:

Describe the subject's uses.
