The parents of the child are insignificant figures in his situation with the bullies. Causing the word 'My' to be highlighted an important word in the poem, because is signifies that they were different.

Stanza 1

Spender uses the words 'threw words like stones' to portray the concept that the words affects the child as much mentally as stones would physically.

Stanza 2

Spender uses repetition of the word 'feared' to explain the mental and physical pain the bullies put him through.
