Eldorado Explanation:

King of Eldorado's Reaction:

  • The king thought their plan was foolish because Eldorado was so stress-free and easy to live in.
  • Because the king was a nice man, he had architects build a machine for both the men and their jewels to leave the community.

Why they left Eldorado:

Other reasons for their departure:

  • If Candide stayed in Eldorado, it was possible that he would affect the community in a negative way, such as stabbing someone like he did before.
  • Candide missed Cunegonde because nothing felt right without the "love of his life."
  • His destiny was Cunegonde, not Eldorado
  • Civilized and peaceful Eldorado was not enough for Candide and Cacambo.
  • Candide wanted to be greater than anyone else, more powerful and more wealthy.
  • Eldorado was a worry-free place, full of gold pebbles and fancy homes.
  • No different religions and everyone is in constant agreement
  • No conflict, which means no jails or court systems

Why do Candide and Cacambo decide to leave Eldorado?

Alan Hammer, Mitchell Kim, and Harry Hu

What aspects of human nature is Voltaire satirizing when he writes that "our two happy wanderers resolved to be happy no longer and to seek his Majesty's permission to leave"?

Human Nature

  • Voltaire is satirizing greed. This is reflected in their departure and not satisfied with the status quo.
  • Candide's Vanity manifested by his desire to impress others with an account of his experiences
  • Desire, this expression in Candide's desire for rights and status, they want to take the wealth here in exchange for status and love.
