Goree Island

  • Island off the coast of Senegal
  • One of the busiest points for exporting slaves during the slave trades
  • About 20 millions African slaves transported through the island from 1500s to mid 1800s
  • Approximately 20% of all slaves died on the transatlantic voyage
  • Small (only 126 acres)
  • Slave-holding warehouse

-Most developed empire out of all three

- Capital was Gao

Ghana

-Also known as the Wagadu Empire

-Areas around where the trade routes were had Sonike people in them. They called their leader Ghana (which meant war chief in their language), so over time that area became known as Ghana.

- Began around 800 A.D, declined around 11th century

-Grew very rich because it taxed the traders that passed through their empire

-Founded around 1400, Sunni Ali started the tremendous empire and ruled for 28 years.

-Timbuktu was one of its most priced city, with a good economy and central hub for trading.

-Founded by Sundiata Keita

- People called the Mandinka people lived there

-Also known as Manding Empire

-Said to have effect on present day African cultures, because of the range of conquered land next to the Niger River.

-Founded in 1235, ended around the 1400's

-Sundiata liked agriculture and promoted alot of trade, mostly of salt and gold

Stateless Societies

-Stateless Society - one where people rely on family lineages to govern themselves, rather than an elected government or monarch.

-Example of one would be the Igbo people in southeast Nigeria

-They are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa

West Africa Economies

-Gold, diamonds, magnesium, and bauxite are the main exports of Ghana

-Ghana's per capital income is $1,900, which is the second highest in Africa, but ranks low compared to the rest of the world

-Sierra Leona also has problems with their economy, while they produce the world's best quality diamonds

-They are ruined by civil wars and a high percent of the population is uneducated. They only have a 31% literacy rate.
