Background Information

Language and democracy

  • Americans speak English, with only some minor changes to spelling and pronunciation of certain words.
  • English Parliament influenced modern American democracy. Britain provided the USA with their government system, they taught this to the American founding fathers, as a result of this England influenced many American laws.
  • England was Protestant, many types of Christianity are practiced in America, and it is the country's leading religion.

Business and Development

  • Steam locomotives and railways were copied from England, many early America locomotives were imported to America from England.
  • Many steel rails were also imported from England.
  • Much of the industrial revolution in America was greatly influenced by England.
  • The British ways of valuing products and services were mostly copied by native Americans.

Culture

  • Many of the things that Americans eat are based on what English settlers once ate.
  • English settlers built wooden houses with sloped roofs, like they had in England, English home styles have remained popular in the US and Canada.
  • British culture such as Rock and Roll influenced American music styles
  • Many towns and cities in America, for example New York and New England were by named by British influence in the area.
  • Much of American television is similar to English television.
  • The United States of America (USA) was founded on July 4th, 1776.
  • English settlers moved to Jamestown, Virginia as early as 1607.
  • Some people moved over to America for religious freedom, as this was hard to find in England.
  • When the English first moved to America it was to do trading and get resources, this gave the settlers gold and wealth.
  • As well as this, England is very small compared to America, land ownership was greatly desired.

Plants and Wildlife

  • Many animals and plant life moved over to America from Europe when the British settlers moved in.
