in French, German, and English. Although he
was a physician, he was an avid sportsman,
swimmer, and a horseback rider. Carlos Juan
Finlay’s real name was Juan Carlos Finlay but
later in his life, he reversed it.

Carlos Juan Finlay was a member of Havana’s Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences. He also became the chief health officer of Cuba for seven years. He was nominated seven times for the Nobel Peace Prize in Physiology or Medicine, but the award was never given to him. Although he never received a Nobel Prize, he received the National Order of the Legion of Honour of France in 1908
