North and South fought because they didn't agree. The South fired the first shot.

Lincoln went against slavery, but Douglass wanted slavery. Douglass won, but Lincoln won for president.

Divided Country

In addition to the violence in "bleeding Kansas," other events depended on the split between the North and South.

Missouri Compromise

In 1819 the united States were made up by 12 free states and 12 slave states.

Resisting Slavery

The slaves broke tools, pretended to be sick, worked slowly, and learned to read and write.

Kansas was split apart from Nebraska.

Compromise of 1850

California became a free state, and the Fugitive Slave Law was passed.
