Aryans and Phoenicians

Aryans

Aryan ways of life

Around 1500 B.C. a group of Indo-European nomadic people began to move out of their original homeland in Central Asia. It was the Aryans. They advanced eastward from the Indus Valley, then they moved southward into the Deccan Plateau. Eventually they extended their control throughout most of India.

After settling in India, the Aryans gave up the pastoral life for farming. The introduction of iron played a role in this change. The creation of the iron plow made it possible for them to cut into the dense jungle growth along the Ganges River, and turn it into rich farmland.

Phoenicians

Phoenician trade

Lived on the Fertile Crescent, off the Mediterranean. They were the greatest traders of their time. They traded wool, slaves, glass, and powdered Tyrian purple. They also had 3 cheif cities Byblos, Tyre, and Sidon.

The Phoenicians improved their ships, became international sea traders, and thus created a trade empire. They charted new routes, and set up a number of colonies in the Western Mediterranean. Carthage was their most known colony.

City in South Governorate of Lebanon. It juts out from the coast of the Mediterranean. It is the fourth largest city in Lebanon, and has one of the nations biggest ports. Tourism is a major part of Tyre, because it has a number of ancient sites.
