By Jacob Sirokman, Jacquelin Perez, Nuasicaa Cromwell, Angelina Petersen

Interesting Facts

The ancient greeks believed in12 chief gods who ruled over Greece. They were Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Athena, Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Aphrodite, Dionysus, and Hephaestus. Most of the gods interacted with humans. For example, Athena was followed by young preistesses.

Food & Shelter

Geography/Settlement

The contest for Athens was when the Poseidon and Athena both tried to gain the worship of Athens. To do this they each gave a gift to the city. Poseidon had given the city a great amount of water. But it was salt water so it could not be drank. Athena gave the olive tree for food, fuel, and heat and light. Athens chose Athena's gift because of its resourcfullness.

The main reason settlers stayed at Greece was because they were close to the ocean. It made the area wet and was good for traveling and trading.

Another reason was becuase Greece is very temperate which is good for farming. However, Greece's area is not very fertile. Becuase of this, they planted wheat in the best soil, and other crops in the poorer soil.

Back then, Greece had an abundance of many things. The ancient greeks grew things like wheat, olives, and grapes for wine. They mainly ate the food that they grew. Meat wasn't eaten as often as other civilizations did. Although, it was almost always served at special events.

As for shelter, their homes were mainly made of clay or mud. They were often two stories tall and had different amounts of rooms based on its size or your place in society.

Olives weren't just for food, the wood from their trees was used for fuel since there was so many of them. They believed that the origin of the olive tree came from the goddess Athena when she tried to obtain Athens' worship.

Ancient Greece

What it was like in Greece

Geography/Settlement

Greece was a land of many things. From gods and godesses to wars and tradition. Living in Greece in that time period meant many different things depending on where you lived or what you did. For example, if you were in the military, you would most likely be at Sparta.

They settled in Greece around the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. The area now is known as the Greek Peninsula.

Greece & Mesopotamia

Greece and Mesopotamia were very similar when it comes to their rises. For example, both civilizations started out as nomads. They both settled in wet areas and had similar ideas in how their government and society worked.

Next is how their governments worked and how they would effect us now. Greece's main focus was about who would lead and how. Some believe that the city of Athens' had something to do with democracy. They would gather together and have about 6000 citizens each time they did so. Any man 18 or older was able to speak and vote in this gathering, or assembly.

Mesopotamia however, worked a bit differently. The kings of the city - states ruled over all and had certain people like priests help them. The kings of Mesopotamia made decisons that would be benificial for all the citizens. One way of doing this was they would make laws that would fair for everyone.
