RVS TECHNICAL CAMPUS-COIMBATORE

  • It stores large amount of electrical energy in small volume

  • If Car uses graphene battery requires 30 sec to charge the battery and a smart phone can be charged in 5sec

Standard supercapacitor

Bio medical Field

  • Efficient bio electric sensory devices
  • Able to monitor glucose level, hemoglobin level
  • Non-Toxic graphene as anti cancer treatment

Current Research in Graphene

  • It's stretchable up to 20% of it's initial length.
  • Its thermal conductivity is much higher than all the other carbon structures such as diamond.
  • It abosorbs only 2% of total light passed through it

Discovery

  • In earlier year, scientist thinks the graphite cannot be separated into single layer
  • In 2004,the young scientists Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselo separates the graphite into single layer by using tape.
  • That single layer is called Graphene.

What is Graphene

  • And they got Nobel prize in 2010 for discovering single layer of graphite.
  • 2-Dimensional hexagonal lattice of carbon
  • It is described as a one atom thick layer of graphite
  • It is basic structure of allotrope's, including graphite, chorcoal and carbon nano tubes.
  • The carbon atoms are arranged in honey comp lattice

How it's manufactured

  • Manufacturing of graphene is very complicated process
  • Only method is,Graphite oxide to Graphene oxide
  • Graphite oxide artificially created by treating graphite with strong oxidisers such as sulphuric acid.
  • Sonication is the most common process to convert graphite oxde to graphene oxide
  • Treating GO with hydrazine hydrate and maintaining the solution at 100 degree for 24 hours and then it is used.

Commercial Viability

Graphene paint that generates electricity from sunlight which can be used for Home Appliances

  • By adding the Graphene to copper the property of the material changed

Future Applications

Solar panel

  • Using graphene in solar panel.it gives high efficiency around 2times of current solar panel.

Lockheed Martin company

It is the only company using graphene in desalination.

Electronic Application

  • The graphene is used in storage devices. It has high storage capacity with small volume
  • The processor using 100GHz transistors on 2 inch graphene sheet
  • Graphene based integrated circuits handled frequencies up to 10 GHz

The film is super thin — just a single atom thick — so that the water simply "pops through the very, very small holes that we make in the graphene and leaves the salt behind,".

Current Application

  • We are know the earth is filled by 97% salt water and 3% fresh water.
  • Our fresh water sources are decreases by human activities.
  • Alternative source for fresh water is desalination of salt water but desalination plant require huge money to build and require energy source.
  • To overcome this the graphene is used in desalination.
  • The process is quite easy. The salt water is passed through graphene and its filtered.

Why they got Nobel prize for this

  • Because It is the thinnest compound known to man at one atom thick, the lightest material known (with 1 square meter coming in at around 0.77 milligrams
  • The strongest compound discovered (between 100-300 times stronger than steel and with a tensile stiffness of 150,000,000 psi)

  • Flexible electronics and strain engineering of atomically thin materials.

  • Atomically thin gas barriers and electrodes for energy/charge transfer and storage (water splitting, fuel cells, etc.).
  • Atomically thin electrodes for photovoltaic or OLED applications.
  • Atomically thin film platforms for bio-sensing and stem cell growth
