STEP #5 - INKING

STEP #4 - TOOLING THE METAL

STEP #5 - MOUNTING ARTWORK

STEP #3 - TRANSFER IMAGES

  • Paint India Ink over front of aluminum.

*Tooling = Forming

  • Find 2 colors of posterboard to create 2 even boarders around your artwork.
  • Tape each of the 3 squares to a piece of 6"x6" aluminum. Be sure the images are faced out.
  • Remove paper & tape.
  • Take a damp clothe, q-tip or papertowel and strategically rub away the ink. Your objective is to make the image stand out so consider that when thinking about what ink stays and what is wiped away.
  • Cut posterboard. Staple the two layers of posterboard together. Fasten artwork to posterboard using staples or hotglue.
  • Use shaping tool to push image from the back, allowing parts of the image to be lifted from the surface.
  • Place aluminum square on a piece of styrofoam with the image facing up. Take a pencil, pen or shaping tool and trace over your drawing while pushing down. This will make an imprint in the metal.

* Push forward forms then think about adding textures.

WARNING: Push too hard results in holes.

STEP #2 - FINAL DRAFT

  • Draw each of your 3 images on a piece of 6"x6" paper in pencil.

CREATING A REPOUSSE

STEP #1 - ROUGH DRAFT

  • Decide on a theme, object or narrative that you could illustrate in three squares.
  • Draw a rough draft of your three images in your sketchbook.

HELPFUL IDEAS:

*It helps to use images to guide your drawings.

TRIPTYCH

*If you create the three 6x6" squares in your sketchbook and draw your first draft in them you could use that for your final draft.

A picture or carving in three panels that has related imagery.

Each image could...

...be part of a bigger image.

...tell a story (beginning, middle, end).

...have a common theme.
