Meiji Restoration and Satsuma Samurai Rebellion

Saigo later led a group of rebellious samurais against the governments army. The government acted swiftly and eventually beat them in a brief but bloody battle. Although Saigo was still alive, he still committed suicide to prevent his capture when he was badly wounded.

Saigo Takamori

It started when the Satsuma clan became dissatisfied with the route the old government was taking. They organized a samurai army that would fight against an western-trained peasant army that was sent by the central government. The rebellion was led by a strong triumvirate: Saigo Takamori, Kido Koin, and Okubo Toshimichi.

Purpose

The main motivation for Japan was the growing domestic problems and the increasing chance of foreign invasion. Japans goal was to create a nation capable of keeping up its rightful place amongst other westernized countries. Their motto was "wealthy country and strong arms".

What is the Satsuma Samurai Rebellion?

What is the Meiji Restoration?

The Satsuma Samurai Rebellion began with the Satsuma clan based in the southern region of the island of Kyushu. The Satsuma clan was run by the Shimazu family. The rebellion actually helped with the Meiji restoration. It started when they became dissatisfied with the route the old government was taking.

The Meiji restoration was a time of conformity in Japan. It restored imperial rule for Japan in 1868 under the rule of the Emperor Meiji. The government was originally run by the Tokugawa shogunate.

Emperor Meiji

The Meiji Period was between 1868-1912. Many social, political, and economic changes took place during this period. It westernized and modernized Japan. The capital of Japan was changed from Kyoto to Japan during this era. The leaders of the restoration were mainly young Samurais.

Their first goal was creating the Charter Oath in 1868. Its purpose was to dismantle the old feudal system. Daimyos (feudal lords) were forced to give all of their land back to the emperor. The national army was formed in 1871. The army was later strengthened in 1873 by a universal conscription law. In the same year, human rights such as religious freedom was established.
