Domesticating Animals

The First Farmers

Early on, farmers learned that if they planted seeds, that plant grew. From this, came the Middle Stone Age. Gatherers sometimes planted and harvested food. People realized that they did not have to be nomads and wander. In the 1900s, in some parts of the world, some groups that were still in the Old Stone Age, existed. Others became Pastoral Nomads and went where there was also food for their livestock.

About 9,000 years ago, chinese harvesters started planting rice and other crops. Later, on the other side of the world in Central America, people planted things like squash, beans, and corn.

It takes a few needs for most plants to grow. Fertile soil and light are important because it gives nutrients to the plants. To have light, places with longer summers and springs are better for growing crops. Gentle rains give water to a plant but heavy rain drown them.

Farms Around the Globe

Starting to Farm

It took tens of thousands of years for communities to start farming. Once the groups of people started farming, their whole lives changed.

Choosing Crops

Plant life was very different in the Middle Stone Age. Farmers chose the best tasting and biggest plants to grow. Therefore we now have the special collection of plants we have today.
