The PCs of the 80's

Transitioning to the 80's

Atari ST

Early 80's in PCs

The Importance of the 80's

The Atari ST was created in 1985 and was the first computer to feature a 16-bit CPU design which was a huge advancement in technological standards. It was also the first computer to feature MIDI sound support, meaning it was a popular choice for running music software. It had high-end graphics making it a great gaming machine, most popular in Europe.

Technology has evolved over the years, but some of its most revolutionary changes have occurred throughout the 80's. Without the technological advancements during that decade we wouldn't have what we have today. Overall, this time period was a very major part in the history of the computing industry and had paved the road for the next generation.

Originally, computers were only used for government and scientific purposes. However, as time passed the prices for these machines dropped which allowed people to afford their own computer parts. This happened especially in the early 80's and above.

After the success of the IBM Personal Computer the average home PC was improved. PCs such as the Commodore Vic-20, BBBC Micro, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, and many others were created simultaneously branching out the industry.

Apple reinvents the PC

IBM was a company that started in the early 70's but became very popular in 1981 when they created the IBM Personal Computer, their cheapest and smallest computer to date. This PC created the standard for the modern PC at the time and started the chain of computers made throughout the decade. IBM continued to make PCs throughout the 80's and is still in business today.

IBM had their huge spike of success in 1981 but took another giant step in 1988 when they fabricated the fastest dynamic memory computer chip at the time. This experimental chip was four times faster than the current generation of chips. This was another revolutionary change made during the 80's for the computing industry.

In 1984 Apple released the Apple Macintosh which set a new standards of excellence in computing and was the start of a line of computers that were to become well known with designers and graphics programs. Apple has previously had great accomplishments in the computing industry so the fact alone wasn't that surprising, but it is undeniable that Apple has had a huge impact on the way computers were before and are today.
