What's Next?

  • Once you have been selected as a Semifinalist and have submitted additional documentation, you will wait to see if you are a Finalist.
  • Finalists will be announced in January 2014. You will be notified and be given information about the personal interviews.
  • Interviews will be held in February 2014.
  • Daniels Scholars will be announced in March 2014.
  • Students will be required to attend the Scholars Heading Into the Future Together (SHIFT) orientation program some time in June.

What Does the Daniels Fund Cover?

  • Fees for test prep classes for graduate school

Financial Eligibility

  • The first portion of the scholarship is a short questionnaire, which requires information used to determine your initial eligibility.
  • Applicants who satisfy the initial eligibility requirement will proceed to the remainder of the application.
  • Applicants are required to complete and submit FAFSA as part of the online scholarship application, which is used to assess financial need and determine financial eligibility.

1. Since it is an open application, the first step that you need to take is to nominate yourself if you believe you demonstrate character, leadership, and service and have financial need.

2. Begin your application, put some time into it, and be yourself.

3. Ask someone from your high school to write a recommendation for you.

4. You will also need 2 or 3 references.

5. Gather all your information about extracurricular activities, community service and volunteer work, and household responsibilities.

6. There are also 7 short answer questions and no essay.

Documentation

You will need some documents when applying, and if you are selected as a Semifinalists some will need to be submitted electronically, which include the following:

  • Proof of citizenship
  • Driver's license
  • ACT score reports
  • Your parents Federal Tax Return for 2012
  • W-2 statements for 2012
  • Records of benefits from Federal or State Assistance Programs
  • Current bank and investment statements
  • Proof of independent status

November 15, 2013 at 4:00pm MST is the deadline to submit the application and recommendation.

Semifinalists will be announced and will be required to submit additional documents in late November and early December.

The Daniels Scholarship is not full-ride, it is “last dollar” and are intended to cover the unmet need of the student. Amounts are different for each student and can change from year to year.

  • Daniels Scholarships pay toward a student’s required college expenses
  • tuition and mandatory fees,
  • room and board or an allowance toward off-campus housing
  • books and supplies
  • health insurance
  • miscellaneous educational expenses
  • Daniels Scholarships are annually renewable up to a maximum of four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if all requirements of the program are met.

Helpful Hints

  • When completing the application choose the response that BEST fits your feelings or experiences.
  • Your attention to detail and your motivation to succeed are demonstrated through your response. Please take the time to carefully proofread your answers and correct any grammatical errors.
  • Avoid using abbreviations, slang, or "texting" language in your answers.
  • Choose a Recommender that is able to provide insight about you from a personal and/or academic perspective.
  • Just be YOU!

What Will Be Expected From You?

  • To attend the new scholar summer conference prior to your freshmen year.
  • To maintain minimum academic requirements while in college and be on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree within four academic years.
  • To be a full-time student.
  • To hold jobs during the school year to continue receiving the scholarships. The minimum work requirement is 125 hours during the first year and 250 hours during each of the other years.
  • To participate in the Daniels Scholar Enrichment Program, a series of online workshops led by local and national experts on topics including Ethics, Character, Patriotism, Civics, Free Enterprise, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Critical Thinking, and Etiquette.
  • To follow the Daniels Scholar Code of Conduct.
  • To maintain regular communication with the Daniels Fund.

Where Can You Use the Scholarship

Challenges

  • Summer school - with approval
  • Transferring schools - only once
  • Study abroad - if it fits your academic plan
  • Extended Funding or Comprehensive plan - under special circumstances (i.e. extreme medical condition, disability or a parent or expectant parent)

Character, Leadership, and Service

  • May be used at any two or four-year nonprofit accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Students must intend to complete a bachelor’s degree. If students start at a two-year college, they must pursue an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree with an intended path to earn a bachelor’s degree.
  • May NOT be used at technical or trade schools or for participation in certificate programs.
  • It is encouraged to apply to college in December.

Who Is Eligible?

  • A current high school senior graduating during this academic year from a high school in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming.
  • A current resident of one of these four states at the time of the application.
  • A citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Have earned an ACT composite score of 17 or higher with no component score (math, English, reading, science) lower than 17
  • A student that demonstrates financial need, character, leadership, and service.

The Daniels Scholarship program encompasses much more than financial support. Students are selected to become Daniels Scholars because they embody the principles and values Bill Daniels identified as hallmarks of the program. Daniels Scholars stand out because they demonstrate:

•Exceptional character, ethics, and integrity

•A hardworking nature and the drive to be successful

•Leadership qualities

•A concern for others and a commitment to give back to their communities
