M.C. Escher was a Dutch artist who was most famous for his work in surrealism. He was born June 17, 1898, in Churchwarden, Holland. He started his career in art during his time in college, where he started to study architecture, but dropped out after 3 years to focus on art on the suggestion
of his teacher.
M.C. Escher's early career showed little success with the art community. However, his art became massively popular with the mathematics and science community due to its superb model of both Non-Euclidean surfaces, or surfaces that defy Euclid's postulates and tessellation.
During Wold War Two, Escher remained largely unaffected by the war up until Benito Mussolini's occupation of Italy. Escher was not a political man and cared little about expressions outside of his own medium, so when his eldest son, George, was forced to wear a Balilla uniform in school, he moved to Château-d'Œx, Switzerland. Although he was satisfied by the safety of Switzerland, he was decisively unhappy with the landscapes of the country.
Starting in 1922, Escher started to tour Italy for inspiration. During this time, he took a great amount of inspiration from the cities of Florence, Volterra, and Rome. Most of his art from this time was realism, and was received well by critics. This was one of the most successful times of his life. As well, during this time, Escher had a growing interest in tessellation as shown in pieces such as
These works are some of his most easily recognized pieces.
Reptiles, Metamorphosis, and Studies of Alhambra.
Later in life, Escher moved back to Holland, where he created many of his most famous works, such as Relativity. In the year 1969 he created his last piece, a lithograph entitled Snakes. Soon after, he died in 1972, in the town of Rosa Spier Huis, in Holland.
M.C. Escher's work lead to better understanding of representations of non-Euclidean geometries and mathematics as a whole. As well, his art is considered some of the best pieces of surreal artwork in history.
I plan to impact society in the future in my career with
new inventions and concepts. These inventions will further improve society to the point that, hopefully, major problems like hunger, homelessness, and war no longer exist.
