Ellis Island was originally 3.3 acres of land. Today it has expanded to 27.5

One third of the immigrants stayed in New York and the others scattered across the country.

Ellis Island is located off the New York Harbor.

It was officially opened on January, 1, 1892.

Immigrants were expected to answer

29 questions concerning their name,

work training, and the amount of

money they had with them.

They were also given a physical

screening and many were denied

entrance due to the discovery of

diseases or chronic health conditions.

Some immigrants with health concerns

had to stay longer for additional testing

Immigrants came to America to reinvent themselves on the new continent, restore traditions, and practices that had been denied and punished in their homeland.

Most Immigrants who came to Ellis Island in the twentieth century came mostly from Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe.

Ellis Island closed down November,12,1954.

From 1892-1954 over 12 million immigrants entered the United States through Ellis Island.

Today 40% of the population can trace their ancestry to immigrants processed through Ellis Island

The first immigrant to pass through Ellis Island was seventeen year old Annie Moore from County Cork, Ireland.
