Civilization vs Savagery
One of the main themes of the novel is the conflict between following rules, following moral commands, acting peacefully, and valuing the good of the group against the instinct to gratify one’s immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will.
Loss of Innocence/Childhood
Another one of the main themes of the novel is the loss of the children innocence. At the start of the book the once innocent children have totally changed, the choir are now blood thirsty hunters, the little ones have grown and became more self-reliant, and the other boys like Ralph have became the most 'adult' to keep the civilized feeling they all once shared.
In the story Lord of the Flies there is a conflict in which the protagonist has different views than what everyone else in the group has. His ideas are far different due to the fact he is much more civilized than everyone else, being that he wants to get off the island while everyone else just wants to hunt and have fun but Ralph is actually being the adult to everyone else causing conflicts.
"Hasn't anyone got any sense? We've got to re-light that fire. You never thought of that, Jack, did you? Or don't any of you want to be rescued?"(Page 111) This shows the different views that Ralph has than everyone else in the group.
In the story the Protagonist has a very hard time being that everyone looks up to him as a 'adult' like figure because he was elected chief. Ralph has internal conflict with himself because he wants to be like the other kids and have fun. This creates a lot of pressure for him. Also he has to constantly protect and keep the peace from everyone on the island and he has to deal with his anger towards Jack always undermining him.
"If you give up," said Piggy, in an appalled whisper, "what would happen to me?" (Page 100) This shows how Ralph is forced to be the barrier between Piggy and Jack.
"Yet Ralph's throat refused to pass one. He resented, as an addition to Jack's misbehavior, this verbal trick. The fire was dead, the ship was gone." (Page 76) The internal conflict that Ralph has for Jack and him always undermining his decisions.
Ralph's feelings towards piggy were very unstable at the beggineing. Ralph was unsure about defending piggy from the group and not letting anyone bully or that he should just leave him and let them say whatever to him. This changed after Ralph witneesed the negative change of Jack and them becoming enmies because Jack treated Piggy badly too, at this point Ralph decided that he should stand up for Piggy and that he deserves to be treated like the rest.
A character named Piggy had a lot of internal pressure because everyone dislikes him because he is an outsider. He has to get to used to being oppressed by everyone but Piggy learns to just be himself and learns to know when it is the proper time to talk and when it isn't. But even than Piggy is bullied by everyone constantly because he is different.
"He's not Fatty" cried Ralph, "his real name's Piggy!"
"Piggy!"
"Piggy!"
"Oh, Piggy!" (Page 17) This is the first sight we see where Piggy is antagonized by everyone on the island.
"You can't come."
Piggy's glasses were misted again - this time with humiliation. (Page 21) Piggy is internally being bullied by everyone on the island is constantly.
In the story Lord of the Flies there is a main conflict that is proven throughout the story, multiple times. This is the conflict of the two oldest boys Jack and Ralph. There was a lot of resentment that Jack had towards Ralph because he was leader and he wasn't. Jack has his own problems of being insecure and he takes it out on Ralph.
"Jack knowing this was the crisis charged too. They met with a jolt and bounced apart. Jack swung his fist at Ralph and caught him on the ear." (Page 199). This shows the external conflict between the two.
""Hands up," said Jack strongly, "whoever wants Ralph not to be chief?" The silence continued, breathless and heavy and full of shame. Slowly the red drained from Jack's cheeks, then came back with a painful rush. He licked his lips and turned his head at an angle, so that his gaze avoided the embarrassment of linking with another eye." (Page 139). This shows the insecurities of Jack and his own internal conflicts.

Ralph approaches issues way differently than the rest of the group does. He is more civilized and believes that they should all work together for the common good which is survival. Ralph is also the leader of the boys who got stranded on the island.
Ralph's ideas were frowned upon by most people but a handful of people still followed him. In the end of the book the problem of people not being civilized and only want to have fun isn't solved. They are rescued off the island by pure luck leaving multiple problems unresolved. This relates to the theme of Civilized vs Savagery because Ralph's ideals are civilized.
"We'll live on our own the four of us -"
"Four of us. We aren't enough to keep the fire burning."
"We'll try. See? I lit it."
Samneric came dragging a great log out of the forest. They dumped it by the fire and turned to the pool. Ralph jumped to his feet. (Page 174) This is given proof that Ralph's ideas are different then everyone else in the groups so he is now part of the outsiders.
Ralph and Jack's realtionship gets worse throughout the development of the Lord of the Flies. They start out as friends and everything is good, but later Jack feels eritated that the group did not choose him as a leader isntaed of Ralph. He alos belifs that the only way to survive is to hunt down all animalsRalph and Jack's realtionship gets worse throughout the development of the Lord of the Flies. They start out as friends and everything is good, but later Jack feels eritated that the group did not choose him as a leader isntaed of Ralph. He also belives that the only way to survive is to hunt down all animals to devour on. Ralph believed in a civilized society and to build a system in order to survive but Jack totally disgreed with him.
In the story Lord of the Flies the conflict of Ralph and Jack never really got solved. In the end of the book there was a giant fight which ended in Ralph getting ran off and hunted but than getting miraculously saved by someone. This relates to the story because these two boys lost there innocence because in there fight they weren't playing. They were doing it to the death. Also Jack represents savagery and Ralph represents civilized.
"Jack wrenched free and swung at Ralph with his spear. By common consent they were using the spears as sabers now, no longer daring the lethal points. The blow struck Ralph's spear and slid down, to fall agonizingly on his fingers. Then they were apart once more, their positions reversed, Jack towards the Castle Rock and Ralph on the outside towards the island." (Page 196) This shows how there were no longer two little kids but men fighting to the death.

Ralph's Internal battle with himself is solved by he learned the ways of Jack and the other boys having fun wasn't as important as getting off the island. Also the pressure of being chief is less pressure because the tribe get separated into two chiefs Jack leading one and the other lead by Ralph. For the keeping the peace there wasn't a lot of conflicts that happened at the end of the book minus a major one at the end. This relates to the overall theme because Ralph is basically the embodiment of a civilized person. Also Ralph had to become the adult of the group so he lost his innocence.
"What's the matter?"
Ralph turned.
"Why?"
"You were looking - I don't know how."
"There's no signal now. Nothing to show." (Page 116) He is acting like the adult of the group so that Ralph lost his innocence.
In the lord of the flies, Piggy has internally lots of problems. Being that he is treated like a outsider from the very first day they've all met at that meeting by the beach. He gets over this problem by just blocking out what everyone thinks of him. But the problem is never truly resolved with an apology from everyone because he dies in the book. This relates to the overall theme of the book because Piggy had to grow up very quickly or he would be picked on even more. Also Piggy represents civilization because he keeps his morals throughout.
"Smoke was rising here and there among the creepers that festooned the dead or dying trees. As they watched, a flash of fire appeared at the root of one wisp, and then the smoke thickened."(Page 44) Immediately after this Piggy told everyone off about how they are acting childish they are being so he represents a civilized person.
Jack and Ralph stood in very difffenet postions while Simon stood inbetween supporting niether of them but rather the sense of human nature that is to be respected and should be look on carefully. He was less talkative than the others which made him avoid any conflict with the other character nd in epscfifaclly here in relation to Jack. He was extremely respected by the others and not regarded into the conflict which was the emobidment fo peace that both Ralph and Jack could not achieve.
