Mercie Cunningham became Merce Cunningham when founding and directing his own dance company in 1953. Merce Cunningham's dance style was Iconoclastic Contemporay. Iconoclastic means one who seeks, overthrow tranditional or popular ideas.
Martha Graham was influenced early by her father who was a doctor and speacilized in nervous disorders. He expressed to Martha that the body could express its inner sense which then that exact statment intrigued Martha to want to dance. Martha Graham studied dance in Los Angeles at Denishawn in 1916.
