Aspects of 2014 version
Music
- Schubert & Bach scores throughout the movie, offering a sort of familiarity yet intensity for the audience
- Not very well-placed music direction, long spaces of silence with loud footfalls

dialogue
- directed by Michael Simpson and translated by Michael Meyer
- It was released on May 31st 1987, in the UK by the BBC
- Janet McTeer plays Julie, Patrick Malahide plays Jean, and Sarah Porter plays Christine
- Jean appears as the unassuming, pompous character, and him and Christine display their flirtatious, almost childlike behavior accurately to each other and the audience alike
- For the sake of the different type of audience - who watch the screen as opposed to actors in their flesh, we see Christine’s face in this version, in the beginning where she is supposed to be ignoring the audience for "naturalistic" purposes
- Simpson also chose to make Jean & Christine's relationship less ambiguous
- More passionate relationships between all characters, probably in order to heighten the entertainment value of the production
clip - miss julies entrance
- Strays from original dialogue of the play
- Includes heavy Irish accents from Kathleen & John, suggesting a larger divide between servants and masters
- Melodramatic/serious tone carried throughout - especially in John & Kathleen's relationship
Acting/Directing Choices
- Jessica Chastain portrays Miss Julie as having a mental breakdown, in particular right after John kills the bird
- Miss Julie is physically depressed, clearly not present at all emotionally (especially post-coitus)
- Kathleen & John's relationship seems to be misinterpreted by Ullman, with no ambiguity to their engagement whatsoever
- Ullman chooses to include scenes right after the sexual encounter, losing the effective ballet scene Strindberg intended

1987 vs. 2014 vs. Strindberg
cinematography
- Shot mostly in real-time with small spurts of analepsis
- Emphasis is put on the actors
- Drawn out, 2hours and 9 minutes as opposed to 90 minutes
- The 1987 production was more true to Strindberg's idea of Naturalism
- 1987 also stays within the boundaries of the kitchen, as prescribed by Strindberg's script, while the 2014 version strays
- Much more dialogue changes in the 2014 version, towards more explicit nature
- 1987 is a bit more ambiguous although not quite as ambiguous as Strindberg intended

Strindberg's Vision
Naturalism
- Born on December 16, 1938 in Tokyo, Japan
- Norwegian actress & film director
- Believes Donald Trump is a modern male depiction of Miss Julie herself
- Through her direction, sought to reclaim Miss Julie from Strindberg and said, "He was not very good in his thoughts towards women and that's why it's good a woman adapted it"
- No footlights on stage
- Minimal make-up
- Favored "naturalistic" acting/blocking
- No intermissions, entire play was to be done in tight 90-minute block - real time
- Desired uncoventional dialogue, Strindberg said, "I have avoided the symmetrical, mathematical in the fabricated French dialogue and let the minds work irregularly as they do in reality, where in a conversation no topic is ever concluded..."

Other key factors
- Gender role and class struggles of the 19th century
- "Like Nietzsche I do not believe in action in the drama! Only occurrences" - dialogue becomes main way to develop/move the plot, important actions happen 'behind the scenes'
- Analysis of the idealization & degradation of a woman, both from Jean's "actions" as well as Miss Julie's unto herself
