Figurative Language and Irony

By: Melika Keshani

Irony

Irony is when the unexpected occurs. There are three types of irony; situational, dramatic, and verbal.

Dramatic Irony

Verbal Irony

Verbal irony is the simplest kind of irony and it's used everyday when you say one thing but actually mean another thing.

ex: When you appear to be sick and someone asks you if you're okay. You say "Of course!" But you really don't feel okay.

Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something that the characters in the story, on the screen, or on stage do not know.

ex: In scary movies when the monster is hiding behind the door and the character isn't sure if the monster is behind the door.

Situational Irony

Situational irony occurs when a situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would be.

ex: The teacher's daughter is a High School dropout.

Simile

"Shampoo"

A smile is a comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as"

ex: He could run like the wind.

"Shampoo" is an acronym for the seven types of figurative language. The seven types are simile, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and oxymoron.

Onomatopoeia

Hyperbole

Personification

An onomatopoeia is the use of words that imitate sounds.

ex: roar and buzz

A hyperbole is an obvious and intentional exaggeration.

ex: I'm so hungry I can eat a cow

Personification is the use of human characteristics to describe animals, things, or ideas.

ex: The ocean danced in the moonlight.

Oxymoron

Alliteration

Metaphor

An oxymoron combines contradictory words.

ex: jumbo shrimp

Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words near each other.

ex: Sally sells seashells by the seashore.

A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things that would normally not be connected (not using like or as)

ex: She has a heart of gold.
