DETERMINISM

"A philosophical theory holding that all events are inevitable consequences of antecedent sufficient causes; often understood as denying the possibility of free will" (Word Net).

It is the school of thought that our lives are predetermined. It offers that we have no control over our actions, and if argued to the extreme, that we are morally responsible for our actions.

EXISTENTIALISM

"A 20th-century philosophical movement chiefly in Europe; assumes that people are entirely free and thus responsible for what they make of themselves" (Word Net).

This thought assumes that every choice we make is a free choice and that if we have options, we also have the option to choose between them. We are morally responsible for all our actions.

MORALITY

Existentialists

  • inability to choose right or wrong removes moral responsibility
  • insist that sense of value comes from freedom; if human choice were predetermined, there would be no distinction between right and wrong

Determinists

  • a moral choice is not truly a moral choice, but a choice predetermined by genetics

THEOLOGICAL

Existentialists

  • God knows how we act because God knows our personalities

Determinists

  • God knows what will happen in the future
  • The choice is already made and cannot be altered

PHENOMENOLOGICAL

Existentialists

  • There is no preference as to one thing or another

Determinists

  • Man will look at one object due to his genetic instinct, his choice is engraved in his mind
