Cause of Syndrome

POEMS syndrome is a rare blood disorder that occurs when an overgrowth of plasma cells (a specific type of cell in the bone marrow) results in production of compounds that damage other parts of the body. POEMS syndrome most often occurs in those over 50 years old and slightly more often in men than in women.

Symptoms

  • Weight loss and fatigue.
  • Extravascular fluid overload with ascites, peripheral oedema and pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, limbs and lung lining respectively)
  • Arterial and venous thromboses (blood clots)
  • Pulmonary disease: Restrictive lung disease.

Treatment

The treatment of POEMS syndrome depends on treating the underlying plasma cell disorder. Most patients are treated with a combination of medical, surgical, and adjuvant therapies. When the plasma cell disorder responds to treatment, all other symptoms of POEMS syndrome usually improve or resolve completely. In general, the prognosis is worse for those with a plasma cell disorder that involves the bone marrow.

Preventions of the Disease

There was no information on how to prevent POEMS Syndrome

How it affects the quality of life

You wouldn't be able to play sports or do anything really active since it weakens your nerves.

Current Research

The current mainstays of treatment for patients with diffuse disease include combinations of corticosteroids, low-dose alkylators, and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation following high-dose chemotherapy. Some caution should be used in selecting the chemotherapeutic regimen to avoid worsening of the polyneuropathy.

Why I chose this Disease

I chose POEMS Syndrome because it looked really interesting and because I recently found out that my great grandmother might have had POEMS Syndrome.
