Findings

  • I found 5 female serial killers within Season 8
  • Their motives include: revenge, delusion, jealousy, anger, obsession, and rejection
  • Their victims collectively include: 4 women and 7-8 men
  • They were all initially assumed to be male

Method

Analysis: 3 Claims

  • 1) The writers of Criminal Minds depict women as emotionally incapable to be serial killers.

  • 2) The writers of Criminal Minds depict women as physically weak in comparison to men.

  • 3) The writers of Criminal Minds reinforce traditional gender roles.
  • I looked into only Season 8 of Criminal Minds, which consists of 24 episodes
  • I counted the episodes with female unsubs (unknown subjects, the killers)
  • I made note of their names, the investigation, their motives, their victims, their traits, and whether or not they were initially assumed to be male

Research Question

In Criminal Minds, are women often assumed to be incapable of being serial killers because they are put into the traditional female gender role of not possessing the masculine traits of a killer as well as the physical strength?

Discussion

Background Information

  • Larger implication: real life crime investigations
  • Interesting perspective: positive and negative masculine traits
  • The concept of gender roles pulled from "Night to His Day: The Social Construction of Gender."
  • Feminine/masculine adjectives in language pulled from "Women as a Muted Group."
