  • About Nine out of Ten chinese farmed for a living.
  • They lived in rural villages surrounded by mud walls.
  • Farmers rented the Aristocrats' fields by turning over part of the crops to the owner.
  • In northern China the farmers grew Wheat and Millet.
  • In the south, the farmers grew rice.
  • The government required farmers to pay taxes and to work one month each year on projects such as building roads.
  • During war farmers had to serve as soldiers.

  • Merchants made money for themselves and also barred from government jobs.
  • Artisans are skilled workers who make useful objects.
  • The artisans of Zhou China crafted iron tools and weapons, silk cloth, and vessels made of bronze or jade.
  • Many were woodworkers, artists, and architects.
  • They practiced hereditary when it came to artisan ways.
  • Artisans made useful goods.
