Inspiration from the church:

My desire with my set design is to strongly convey Orgon’s gross obsession with Tartuffe as well as Tartuffe’s false, heretical holiness. I hope to do this with a number of specific aspects...

The Catholic church was my inspiration for this design. Their ceremonies have not really changed from their origins to now. Therefore, in this set design one can use practically any classic furniture or decor from modern day.

In Catholicism, there is a particular emphasis on purification by priests via holy water, incense and prayers. There is also a need for the congregation to confess their sins to the priest in order that they may be pure. In order to convey both the sincerity of their beliefs and Tartuffe’s attempt to persuade others of his holiness, I have put as much Catholic furniture as I can on stage.

Orgon's Obsession:

-This will frame Orgon's lame, personal, relational obsession with Tartuffe. I hope to make the audience as uncomfortable with Tartuffe as Orgon's family is.

-A painting of himself and Tartuffe over the fireplace.

-As the play progresses, family paintings on the back wall will be taken down and replaced with religious decour.

-A lack of furniture and the fireplace covered.

-This will show Orgon's willingness to submit all things to Tartuffe's whim. It will also show Tartuffe's control over him.

-Tartuffe has declared that the company Orgon's family is keeping is inappropriate. In order to discourage company, he has taken the chairs and couches away and has covered the fireplace

Stage: Proscenium

...with a smaller crowd of about 200-300.

In Tartuffe, a man (Tartuffe) feigning piousness and holiness deceives and weaves his way into the heart of another man named Orgon. Orgon’s absolute obsession with Tartuffe leads him to offer Tartuffe to stay in his household in order that he might sanctify his family. It is obvious from the opening scene and onward that the rest of Orgon’s family is not at all taken with Tartuffe and are victims of this strange arrangement. The family spends most acts of the play trying to convince Orgon that Tartuffe is a fake.
