The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society

We define adult illiteracy today as an inability to read and write, or commuicate with the world around them.

Today, society requirs literary skills to be more important.

Illiteracy means that adults had a lack of learning in earlier years of school.

Is it more prevalent than in 1985?

Illiteracy is less prevalent now, than in 1985 in the United States.

By 1992, one in five adults suffered from a lack of literacy skills.

What is being done to prevent adult iliteracy now?

To help prevent further illiteracy, schools are taking the initiative.

Parents who cannot help their kids with homework, are a reason for taking an initiative.

Parents don't want their children to grow up with the same reading difficulties

So to help the future adults of the U.S, schools are working to lower the drop out rate, and give students the oppertunity to learn the skills they need to succeed.

We can raise the concern in schools by showing students how many oppertunities they have.

Not only is the school disctirct working on illiteracy, but parents as well.

They help by becoming involved in their children's schools as much as possible.

Programs or parent-teacher meetings are helping in their own ways.

What do you think Kozol would say about your evidence and the state of illiteracy in America today?

Based on my findings, and his opinions from his essay, I think that Kozol would find the results astonoshing.

Kozol's ideas about illiteracy show that he believes it is an error society made. He wants his readers to feel equal to illiterates.

My research would show Kozol that more is being done to prevent illiteracy.

Kozol would find that the percentage of illiterates has decreased since his book was published.

The U.S Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings said "One adult unable to read is too many in America".

After reading Kozol's essay in class, I believe The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society was written to raise awarness

Therefore, my evidence would conclude that Kozol's beliefs impacted others

Jonathan Kozol would see my evidence as an answer to his beliefs

The decreased number of illiterate adults shows that illiteracy is an important topic in our country.

My research can show Kozol that his book opened the minds of his readers.
