Value

Value is the brightness or darkness of a color.

  • Value is changed by adding white or black to a color.
  • Adding white makes the color lighter.
  • Adding black makes the color darker.

Elements of ART

These paintings are made with only 1 color. The dark and light values are made by adding white and black.

  • Space: There are shapes in the foreground and background to understand the area. The shows a whole hill side.
  • Watch the video to learn how to make your Elements of Art Circle.
  • The video shows how to make the sections.
  • You have to draw a large circle in the center after drawing the lines for the 6 sections.
  • One of your Elements of Art will be on the outside of the circle going all the way around the circle.
  • You pick the Element that you want to go on the outside of the circle.
  • Texture: The heavy brush strokes provide a texture. The multitude of colored brush strokes give it even more of a sense of texture.
  • Shape: The night is filled with 2 dimension shapes form the squares and triangles that make up the houses, to the free form shape of the night and foreground.
  • Line: Lines fill the sky to give it the movement.

What are the Elements of Art

  • Form: Form is demonstrated in the tree in the foreground and the geometric houses in the background.
  • Value: The different shades or value of the colors help direct you eye through the painting. The different value also helps create movement in the painting.

The Elements of Art are like the ingredients in a recipe but instead of making tasty food they help you make art.

  • Color: Color is used to create a mood and feeling about the picture. The use of color draws your eye to the moon and the movement of the sky.

  • Space can be how you draw things to show how close or far away they are.

  • Textures is how something feels when you touch it. It is also how things look like they feel if you can't touch them.
  • You can draw texture to look real or make up your own.
  • Texture can be found in nature, for example grass, flower petals, rocks and tree bark.
  • Color is important in art.
  • It can be made darker by adding black.
  • It can be made lighter by adding white.
  • Color can show feelings in art or affect your mood.
  • Primary colors can not be made from mixing colors.
  • Secondary colors can be made from mixing primary colors.
  • Some colors are warm and others are cool.
