Desi Arnaz is from the island/country Cuba. Cuba is southeast of the U.S. State, Florida in the Caribbean Sea. The island is 780 miles long and has an area of 40,369 square feet making it the largest Caribbean island. The Cuban flag has three blue stripes and two white with a red equilateral triangle at the hoist. Within the triangle is a white, five pointed star. The flag is 40 inches in length by 20 inches in width. Designed by Narciso Lopez, the flag was adopted on the 25 of June in 1848. The blue stripes represent the three divided parts of the country during the independence wars and the white stripes represent the purity of the patriotic cause. The red of the triangle represents the blood sacrificed to gain independence and the star symbolizes that independence. The current leader of Cuba is Raul Castro. His official title is The President of the Council of State of Cuba. He has been in power since 2008, his term is 5 years long and can be renewed once.

Desi Arnaz started as almost a jack of all trades in entertainment, doing mostly film, but also other forms of entertainment. When he moved to the U.S., Desi Arnaz used show business to support himself. He stared in a Broadway musical called “Too Many Girls,” in 193. He went on to Hollywood the next year to appear in a movie version of the show that stared his later wife, Lucile Ball. The two married on November 30 of 1940. Arnaz also played guitar for Xavier Cugat. Following his discharge from the Army, he formed another orchestra, which was successful in live appearances and recordings.

I Love Lucy

Cuba was discovered in 1492 and established as Spanish territory. In 1562, African slave trade began there. In 1868, Cuban colonists revolted against Spain under the reasoning of unjust rule and the war ended with a treaty for the better treatment of Cuban colonist, only for the second independence war in 1895 which ended in 1998 when Spain relinquished all rights to Cuba. Cuba has their first dictator in 1924 and a series of dictators afterward until Fidel Castro leads a revolution in 1959 and becomes prime minister. In 1962, the Cuban missile crisis occurs and in 1976, Castro forms a socialist government.

Desi’s career really took off when he starred with his wife in the television show, I Love Lucy. The original idea was for the couple to portray Lucy and Larry Lopez, a successful show business couple whose glamorous careers interfered with their efforts to maintain a normal marriage. Eventually the plot for the show was finalized as Ricky Ricardo, a struggling young orchestra leader and Lucy an ordinary housewife with business fantasies but little to no talent. The idea of Desi’s Cuban accent and Latin style would not be agreeable to American viewers, but it flourished after the summer of 1950 when the couple toured live in a vaudeville act they developed with the help of Spanish clown Pepito Perez.

Cuban agriculture has had many ranges throughout its history. In chronological order, its main crops are sugar, tobacco, citrus fruits, rice, potatoes, cassava and tropical fruits. Cuban cuisine consists of is a mix of Spanish and Caribbean foods. A typical meal might consist of plantains, black beans and rice, shredded beef and possibly tropical fruit. The central form of Cuban music is called Son and it is the basis of the salsa, rumbo, and mambo.

In addition to I Love Lucy, Desi executive produced “The Anne Southern Show,” “Those Whiting Girls,” and was also involved in other series such as “The Untouchables.” He also produced the feature film “Forever Darling (1956),” in which he and Ball starred. Desi also started the company, Desilu.

The original Desilu Company continued long after Arnaz’s divorce from Ball, both producing its own shows and providing producing facilities to other producers. Among the later shows produced at Desilu were: The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, and Star Trek. When Ball sold her share of Desilu to what became Paramount Television, Arnaz went on to form his own production company form the ashes of his share of Desilu, and with the newly formed Desi Arnaz Productions, he made the Mothers-In-Law for United Artist Television and NBC, this ran for two seasons from 1967 to 1968. Arnaz’s company would be succeeded in interest by the company now known as Desilu, Too.
