The Beginning

Plain of Jars

Laos wasn't always known as the nation it is today. In the fourteenth century the Laotian state was ruled by small kingdoms for several hundred years. France claimed much of Southeast Asia including Laos in 1893. When Communism took over Laos in the 1960s 350,000 Laotians fled the country. Majority of the population is unbelievably poor they have no freedom to increase their situations. Although slowly progressing from their past it is unsure if Laos will be a free country.

4. The king cobra, red panda, and Irrawaddy Dolphin reside in Laos.

These mysterious jars are scattered throughout Laos. Making this area to be known as the "Plain of Jars". Created out of sandstone and granite weighing up to 13 tons. The height of the jars range to be 3 to 10 feet tall. Many archaeologists believe the Laotians used them for food storage or funeral urns. The jars also indicate they were made about 1500 to 2000 years ago. Some jars grouped together in a line are to be a indication of trading with northern india.

Clothing/Attire

Sinhs are skirts women wear to special occasions such as weddings and family gatherings. The sinhs is known to be traditional attire for women. Material for sinhs are gathered from natural resources such as silk and cotton. Each sinhs is unique in its own way, it would be had to find two of the same. Sinhs consist of three different parts : the houa (waistband), pheun(body/main part), and tdin (hem). This the most common attire for women all over Laos.

Got Elephants?

Laos has the largest amount of wild Asian elephants out of Southeast Asia. Many times they are tamed to use as entertainment. Asian elephants are unique compared to their kin African elephants. For instance Asian elephants are smaller, smaller ears, and lighter skin. Many Laotians live in rural areas near the elephants. In this regard there are many conflicts between people (mainly farmers) and elephants. Sharing the land with elephants affects both theirs and the elephants way of living.

Food/ Cuisine

The national dish of Laos is known to be Larb. Larb is a meat salad. This dish is quick and easy to make working with a variety of meats. Many Laotians shop for fresh grocery daily due to limited refrigeration. A household dish that families serve daily is wet rice or dry rice. A popular beverage bought is sugarcane juice. Other popular foods are : Citrus Fruits, foe(rice noodle soup), and freshwater fish.

Type of Governement

In December 1975 Laos was known as "Lao People's Democratic Republic". Recently was changed to just Laos. A third of its population lives below the poverty line. ( Living off of $1.25 U.S. dollars per day) In 1893 Laos was known as three kingdoms called Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Champasak.( "French protectorate") In 949 Laos was under French and Japanese ruling, later becoming independent in 1953. After becoming independent Laos declared to be a constitutional monarchy.

Geography

Laos is known to be a landlocked nation in Southeast Asia. Northeast of Thailand and west of Vietnam. Laos' overall temperature is known to be tropical monsoon. May through October is the rainy season. November through February is the cool dry season. The dry seasons occurs during March and April . Laos tends to have very unique weather.

Vientiane

Vientiane is the nations largest city also known as the capital. The city contains many preserved historically sites. Such as well-preserved temples, and numerous structures dating back to the French colonial period. Prince Setthathirath built the Great Stupa this ornate structure is a Buddhist temple.Vientiane is compared to be small and quite to other cities in Southeast Asia.Around 633,000 Laotians inhabitant this city keeping it running freely. Vientiane was officially made the states capital in 1893 under French control. According to records this city has been around for about one thousand years.
