The 7 Principles of Government

Separation Of Powers

By Joi Harrell

Each of the three branches of government has its own responsibilities.

Current day duties of Separation Of Powers:

  • Executive = Principal ( Proposes policies).
  • Legislation = Parents (Makes laws).
  • Judicial = Students ( Interpret laws).

Checks And Balances

System in which each branch of government has the ability to restrict, or limit the actions of other two branches.

Current day examples of Checks And Balances (using the last example from Separation Of Powers):

  • Parents (Legislative) can override the veto from the Principal (Executive).
  • Students (Judicial) can declare acts of the Principal (Executive) unconstitutional.

Federalism

The sharing of power between the national and state governments.

Limited Government

Thank You for viewing my presentation!

Happy Holidays!

The Constitution limits the actions of government by specifically listing powers it does not have.

Federalism impacts my daily life by taxes. Taxes are collected from our local government. Then taxes are collected from the national government from the local government, which is our money. The money is either used for local schools or even for welfare.

Examples of Limited Government affecting society:

  • If the President was caught speeding down the highway, he would receive the same consequences as any other person, which would be a ticket.
  • The President cannot take away your Unalienable Rights (Life, Liberty, Pursuit Of Happiness).

Popular Sovereignty

Bill Of Rights

People are the source of the government's power.

The first ten amendments to the Constitution and detail the protection of individual liberties.

Second Amendment: The right of states to organize militias, or armies, and the right of individuals to bear arms.

  • Advantage: Citizens are able to protect themselves with the right to bear arms.
  • Disadvantage: Citizens could cause harm to those around with the right to bear arms and form armies.

People are the source of government's power from voting. The people vote for who they believe can voice their opinions in most or all situations. Without people, the government has no power over the non-listening audience. This all applies to voting for Presidents, judges, and other officials for Congress.

Third Amendment: Forbids the government to order private citizens to allow soldiers to live in their homes.

  • Advantage: Limits the government from taking over full control of the citizen's rights and privacy.
  • Disadvantage: Soldiers could possibly not have enough food or shelter to supply everyday.

Ninth Amendment: States the people have rights other than those specifically mentioned in the Constitution.

  • Advantage: Citizens can use their rights to receive fair justice
  • Disadvantage: Citizens possibly may not know about their other rights not mentioned in the Constitution and could be overpowered by the government.

Republicanism

People elect their political representatives.

Republican:

  • Businessman Donald J. Trump
  • Governor Mike Pence

Democratic:

  • Former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton
  • US Senator Tim Kaine

Green:

  • Dr. Jill Stein
  • Ajamu Baraka
