Standard Of Living

Society:

-Their society was based around a social

hierarchy. The monarch was the highest followed

by the nobility,gentry, merchants and then

-Life was often dictated by religion. For example the proper way for children to behave was taken from a bible passage.

Education:

-The quality of the education depended on social rank of the individual.

-Public schools were for both the rich and the poor and focused more on the basics like english.

-Private schools were only for the rich and often taught more advanced things liek Greek and Latin.

-Both types of schools always taught Christian values and how to be a good Christian.

Cost Of Living:

-The average household servant made only 2-3 euros annually.

-The cost of living compared to today was VERY cheap, but expensive if you look at how much they made a year. For example a bottle of ale would cost 2 pennies

Food:

-Depending on your financial standing, you ate different types of food.

-The lower and middle classes ate vegetables and grains, while the rich ate sweet food and meats.

Health

The health standards during the Elizabethan period were not very clean and many different diseases affected the population.

Health Concerns

Living in the 16th century may not be very appealing to the modern age because the streets of cities were filled with garbage, sewers were often blocked and people would dispose of their garbage by throwing it in the rivers.

Treatments and Cures

Medical technology was not as advanced as we are today so people created potions and used herbs and other remedies to cure themselves

Cure for Headache: Rose, Lavender and other scented herbs

Cure for Earache: Roasted onion (placed inside ear)

Cure for Stomachache: Wormwood, mint and balm

Cure for Lung problems: liquorice, marijuana and comfrey

Lifespan

The average lifespan of males was 47 years old. In London the average lifespan of the upper class was 35 years old and the lower class was 25 years old.

  • In Elizabethan times entertainment was a key component in everyday life.

Feasts

Large prepared meal for many people usually in celebration of a religious event

a dinner honoring a certain guest

plays started in the courtyard, then later ended up indoors in theaters

Dancing

people gathered to enjoy a night of music and dancing

Jousting

a series of events testing the abilities of knights

Hunting

sport followed by the nobility often using dogs

Sports

games that included archery, bowling, cards, dice, and hammerthrowing

Clothing

The types of clothes you wore were displayed differently through the upper and lower classes and if you were either male or female

Upper Class

These people were allowed to wear a cloth of gold or gold tissue but anyone lower than Duchesses, Marquises and Countesses weren't allowed.

If you weren't in an upper class then you had to wear the required clothing by law. If you didn't wear the required clothing then you could be fined, lose your property or lose your life.

Women

  • The underclothing for women included smock or shift, stockings or hose, corset or bodice and farthingale( a hooped skirt)
  • Over clothes included a gown, separate sleeves, ruff, cloak, shoes, and hat.

Men

  • For men's underclothes included a shirt, stocking or hose, codpiece and corset.
  • Over clothes included doublet, separate sleeves, breeches, belt, ruff, cloak, shoes and hat.
