Teen Driving Issue Project - Drunk Drivers

By: Julio Zegarra

Something else that should be

done to help solve or curb the problem.

* Have some special designation on the license plates of people whose driver's license have been revoked or suspended for a DUI/DWI.

* Restrict nighttime driving for young drivers.

* Passing laws that prohibit open containers in public places. Some states also have laws that prohibit open containers in cars.

What can personally do to make more people aware of this issue?

* Require my school to provide more education and information about alcohol and drunk driving to prospective drivers.

* I would go to public service announcements on TV and the radio and tell them to create a recreational program about drunk and driving for teens and adults.

* Having campaigns in my school and my community about the drunk driving issue. These could include fund raising activities to let both teenager and adults about the statistics and car crashes that are caused by drinking and driving per year.

Part 1:

Identify the Issue

  • Why is Drunk Driving a problem for teens?

Drunk Driving is a problem especially for teens

not only it is against the law but also it can cause car crashes, deaths or injuries to your self or someone you don't know. Also, it can cause economic costs, legal issues, and long- term undesired outcomes.

How is another organization or group is working to solve the problem?

- The mission of the SADD was to help young people say "No" to drinking and driving.

- Provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions.

- SADD do not support or condone activities that encourage or enable the use of alcohol by underage young people:

+ Designated Driver programs for underage young people

+ Safe Rides programs

+ Parties where alcohol is not served under any circumstances what so ever to teens not ever under supervision of or with the knowledge or consent of parents or other adults

Statistics from research regarding teen crash rates.

- About 4,700 annual deaths of underage youth.

- In 2010, 1 in 5 teens who were in fatal car crashes had alcohol in their system.

- In 2003, 31% of teen drivers who died in car accidents had been drinking.

- 40% of alcohol related fatal car crashes involve teens.

- 60% of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol related.

How is one organization or group trying to solve this problem?

- The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.

- MADD’s Campaign is to Eliminate Drunk Driving focuses on three important steps we all can take today to stop drunk driving tomorrow: Support our heroes, sober to start and a secure the future.

- In 2006, in response to the over 13,000 people who were killed each year in drunk driving crashes. MADD launched the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.

Today, we can see a future without drunk driving, but we need your help to get there.
